This is a gigapan from atop the car at a water hole in Addo Elephant Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The elephants not only spent nearly an hour at the hole; they kept disabusing the warthogs of the notion that they could possibly share the water hole. Lots of trunks with menacing gestures directed right at the very thirsty warthogs, who couldn't bear to give up.

Anjeer- dried figs- are my very favorite of these dried fruit snacks. Just fabulous and very nutritious, these are found in the kitchen, on the dining room table and living room tables in every Persian house.

Dates are also very important- you eat them during Ramadan at the breaking of the fast, with tea. Here are two different varieties that have very different levels of taste, texture and sweetness.

One form of Ajil is these nuts in-shell that guests will eat and, with decades of practice, shell with their mouths, without the aid of their hands at all- no kidding- just emitting from their lips the empty shells. Several nuts at a time! The seeds can be sunflower seeds and many others types, mixed in with pistachios and dry chick peas.

Sweet mixed nuts- pre-mixed and for sale. Put these on the table along with some hot black tea and you have the perfect Persian welcoming that the host provides when guests arrive.

Pistachios are to Iranians like Snow is to Eskimos. They are a deep part of our culture. There are many varieties, many drying and salting methods, and they all taste absolutely fabulous- nothing like the little packages one buys in US supermarkets.

Tavazo means scale- and this store is probably the most famous nut and dried goods store in Tehran. Dried nuts are incredibly important in Iranian culture. When someone comes over, you provide hot tea, and you provide either a salty or sweet mixture of nuts, including dried figs, almonds, walnuts, pistachioes and many other ingredients. The sweet version also has raisins. It is delicious.

I wonder what these primitive-looking plants are. Reminiscent of some fynbos.
